“You have rarely seen such an individualistic group of artists more relaxed and cheered up both internally and externally. Showmanship is always frowned upon in Lockenhaus” was something that could be read in Die Zeit about the Lockenhaus Chamber Music Festival in its founding year.
Founded in 1981 by Gidon Kremer and Msgr. Prof. Josef Herowitsch, the festival quickly developed into an internationally recognized “oasis of chamber music”.
The festival has always served as a place for discoveries, experiments, the presentation of young artists and the development of artistic partnerships. Numerous lifelong friendships were formed here through making music together at the highest level. It is program at the Lockenhaus Chamber Music Festival that there are no ready-made programs in advance. As a listener, you are invited to become part of the adventure that our artistic director Nicolas Altstaedt will take you on every day from July 10th to 19th, 2025. The program is designed at short notice, taking into account the composition of the artists present - often on site the evening before!
So take your time to immerse yourself in the unique Lockenhaus experience and plan several days for your stay in the heart of Europe - and yet secluded from the world - in the middle of the forests of Central Burgenland in the Blaufränkischland (land of the red wine variety Blaufränkisch).

Review of the Lockenhaus Chamber Music Festival 2024 “orbis tonorum”
The successful 43rd edition of the Lockenhaus Chamber Music Festival ended with Sándor Veress' “Orbis tonorum”, brilliantly conducted by the legendary 85-year-old Heinz Holliger. Over 60 international musicians aged 12-87 like Sir András Schiff, Gidon Kremer, Vilde Frang, Fazil Say, Heinz Holliger, Anna Lena Elbert, the Kebyart Ensemble and many others followed Nicolas Altstaedt's invitation to play together in the international mecca of chamber music in Lockenhaus. Around 6,300 enthusiastic visitors experienced 25 top-class events within 10 days in the Lockenhaus Church and Castle, as well as in the Köszeg synagogue. 8 events were completely sold out.
