Lockenhaus

“In the thrice ninth kingdom, behind four times seven mountains, lies the big world - but that is a long way from Lockenhaus in Burgenland.
Airports, highways, express trains are elsewhere.
Here you can look across the lake at the knight's castle without radio antennas, high-voltage lines or wind turbines coming into view.
The air here is said to be better than anywhere else in Austria.
It smells of hay, the linden trees are blooming, a stork is wading through the stream.”

In the middle of the picturesque idyll of Austria’s most Eastern county Burgenland the Marktgemeinde Lockenhaus is located at the foot of the mountain Geschriebenstein about 100 km South of Vienna.
Before the birth of Christ, the area was part of the Celtic kingdom of Noricum and was part of the surrounding area of the Celtic hilltop settlement on the Schwarzenbacher Burgberg.
During the time of the Roman Empire, today's Lockenhaus was in the province of Pannonia. The first documented mention of the community of Leuka can be found as early as 1200.
Surrounded by the wooded landscape of the Günser Mountains, the market town of Lockenhaus, founded in 1492, combines a turbulent history with a lot of culture and tradition.
The place, like the entire Burgenland, belonged to Hungary (German West Hungary) until 1920/21. Since 1898, the Hungarian place name Léka had to be used due to the Budapest government's Magyarization policy. After the end of the First World War, German Western Hungary was awarded to Austria in the Treaties of St. Germain and Trianon in 1919 after tough negotiations.
Since 1921, Lockenhaus has belonged to the then newly founded federal state of Burgenland.

For over four decades, the world's best in chamber music has gathered in Lockenhaus at the beginning of summer.
When friends make music with friends for friends, then you have arrived in Lockenhaus! The basic principle is the joy of music, of trying things out together, of being together and of the openness of encounters.

Ritterburg Lockenhaus

The former knight's castle of the Templars and former residence of the bloodthirsty Countess Erszébet is now known as the setting for this fine chamber music festival founded by Gidon Kremer and now directed by Nicolas Altstaedt.
As the last real knight's castle with a smokehouse, cult room, knight's hall, chapel and priest's room - located above an old trade route - Castle Lockenhaus represents all other fortresses both in terms of art history and history of the country in the shadows. A cult room, in which, as in crusader castles, the light enters through an opening in the top of the vault, is attributed to the Templar Order, and the knight's hall with the Gothic ribbed vault is also said to have served as a secret meeting place for the Templars. Today Lockenhaus Castle houses a museum with exhibitions and guided tours on various key topics.

Franz Liszt
Birthouse

Franz Liszt was born in this house (27km from Lockenhaus) on October 22nd, 1811.

His father Adam Liszt was a sheep farm manager in the service of the Esterházy princes, who had owned this farm since 1805. At that time, the stone building covered with wooden shingles consisted of six rooms, a kitchen with a pantry and a press house. As part of an early Baroque fort, it was certainly the most stately house in the town, which had around 600 inhabitants at the time. Today, a museum is housed in the still preserved part of the former Meierhof.
