Lockenhaus Knight’s Castle - Ritterburg Lockenhaus "Burg"

The Lockenhaus Knight's Castle was built around the year 1200 above the Güns valley and was initially called Leucea. Today it is considered the last real knight's castle in Austria. The Romanesque and Gothic construction, delicate columned windows, frescoes, an underground aspid hall, crypt and many other details from the 13th century testify to a highly developed sense of art. Located in the heart of the Geschreibenstein Nature Park, the Lockenhaus knight's castle has always been an impressive attraction.

Pfarrkirche Lockenhaus "Kirche" - Lockenhaus Church

The parish church of St. Nicholas was built in the 16th century by the Italian master builder Pietro Orsolini. The church impresses with the painting on the high altar: it shows St. Nicholas of Myra (from 1675), to whom the church is dedicated. There are six side altars in the church interior. There is a crypt beneath the church, which served as a family crypt for the builder Franz Nádasdy.
The largest church organ in Burgenland has been located in the Lockenhaus parish church since 2003. The most complex musical instrument construction in the history of the country was made possible by a foundation from Countess Elisabeth Enzenberg and reached its crowning conclusion with the organ consecration on June 28, 2003.

The organ, newly built by the Vorarlberg company Rieger - Austria's most renowned organ building company - is a mechanical slider chest organ with electric stop action, it has 35 stops on 2 manuals and a pedal, the number of pipes is 2400, with the smallest pipe only being around 8 mm, the largest pipe measures approx. 4 m.

Köszeg Synagogue

In western Hungary and in what is now Burgenland, Jewish cultural life flourished during the Austro-Hungarian Empire, of which the synagogue in Kőszeg provides impressive evidence. The construction of the synagogue complex, which also includes the rabbi's house, the courtyard, the garden and the fence, was financed in 1856 by Philipp Schey (1798-1881), who rose from a retailer in Kőszeg to a major businessman in Vienna. In 1859, Schey was raised to the Austrian nobility by Emperor Franz Joseph - he was the first Jew to receive this honor and then bore the title Philipp Schey von Koromla. During the Second World War, the Jewish population of Kőszeg was sequestered in a ghetto. In 1944, the prisoners were deported first to the Szombathely ghetto and then to Auschwitz. In autumn 2022, the synagogue, which had been falling into disrepair since 1944, was reopened to the public after extensive renovation. Since then, cultural and scientific programs have been presented in the building, and thanks to its excellent intimate acoustics, the synagogue has also been used for music events as part of the Lockenhaus Chamber Music Festival since 2023.
